The new role

Mentoring teams and codebases into the agentic age

AI coding agents change how software gets made. They write, refactor, test and ship at a pace no team has worked at before, and they amplify whatever they find. A messy repository and unclear habits get messier, faster. My role is to mentor both sides of that equation: the people, and the code they work in.

A repository is a living thing: shape it, prune it, keep it healthy.

Mentoring teams

  • Pairing developers with agents in day-to-day work, from prompt to pull request
  • New roles and habits: specifying, reviewing and steering instead of only typing
  • Hands-on coaching sessions on real tickets in your own codebase
  • Clear agreements on when a human decides and when an agent may act

Mentoring codebases

  • Shaping a codebase that explains itself, so people and agents can find their way in it
  • Clear expectations, written down, so agents work the way the team does
  • Tests and structure as a shared foundation that keeps every change on course
  • Regular, gentle care that keeps the codebase light, current and easy to grow

Full circle and full stack, in six disciplines

  • Full circle and full stack

Seeing the whole: from the first idea to the running product, from interface to infrastructure, and the loop that brings what we learn back to the start.

  • Deployment

Making shipping calm and routine, so change becomes something a team does every day without holding its breath.

  • Version management

Keeping the story of a codebase readable, so every change, from a person or an agent, can be understood, traced and undone.

  • Safety

Giving agents room to work while keeping people in charge: clear boundaries, trust that is earned, and care for what matters most.

  • Quality assurance

Making quality a shared habit rather than a final gate, so speed and confidence can grow together.

  • Repository hygiene

Tending a codebase like a garden: small, regular care that keeps it healthy for everyone who works in it, people and agents alike.

Who I am

About Me

“Rational and contemplative, and really a romantic.”

I am a creative technologist. I started out in music and technology, automating recording studios and writing music for commercials, television and events, and found my way into software from there. For more than twenty years I have built and led software as a full-stack developer, architect, project manager and team lead, for agencies, scale-ups, research institutes and international platforms.

Today my work centres on agentic development. I mentor teams and their codebases as they learn to work with AI coding agents, and I keep the whole picture in view while doing it: from the first specification to deployment, with version management, safety, quality assurance and good repository hygiene woven into everyday work. Alongside that, I design AI architectures, build intelligent workflows for development teams and create agentic systems that take routine work off people's hands.

What I bring is a pragmatic view. New technology only creates value when it fits the people, the codebase and the business it is meant to serve, and helping those three come together is what I enjoy most. Colleagues and clients tend to describe me as:

  • Analytical
  • Business oriented
  • Creative
  • Persevering
  • Pragmatic

I am at my best where ideas turn into something that works: making a promising technology a calm, reliable part of how a team builds. My roots in full-stack development, serverless architectures and real-time systems give me a solid base for that, and I still love to build things myself.

Away from the screen I make music and drawings. I love long-distance walks and being outdoors, by the sea or in the mountains. I am rational and contemplative, and, quite honestly, also a romantic.
